Everybody's talking about Tiana

Tiana and her Prince

Tiana and her Prince

Now that Disney have finally stepped up to the plate and produced an African American Princess, is everyone happy?

Of course not, there are those who don’t like the African American Princess Idea, those who don’t like the fact that she doesn’t have a Black Prince.

Can Disney ever please everyone, probably not.

Today's Blog – Invisible Woman Black Cinema at Large

Invisible Woman black Cinema at Large

Invisible Woman black Cinema at Large

I surf the web every single day, (sad I know) but I do it looking for great content to bring to you guys.  Well mostly anyway ;D  I often find that a lot of the material is either so short or so in depth that it’s not always suitable.

Many of the black blogs I come across focus specifically on one topic or so many that that they are hard to keep track of.   Naturally I do find the odd few gems out there.

One such gem is this Invisible cinema.  It focuses primarily on black/African Afctors and film.  Whilst it can be kind of hard to always find what you might be looking for almost each and every little article is funny or on  point which is a great feat to achieve.   The blog is illustrated by an old school theme and peppered with descriptive images and witty captions.   Some of the images made me laugh out loud, I  don’t know where the blogger finds them.  I particularly liked the critique of stereotypical film roles from black and latino actors.  I think it will raise a few eyebrows for sure.

Get on over there and leave the lady some comments because we have to support each other.

Black History Month: Babymother (UK 1998)

Anita, the main character proudly holds her children

Anita, the main character proudly holds her children

Babymother is one of the few Black British films to receive a UK release of any kind since the 1980s, but even so, it is likely to be better known abroad where it was shown in festivals. In the UK it received only a very limited distribution and has been seen mainly on Channel 4 television.

The first TV airings showed cropped images from what is a widescreen (CinemaScope) film musical (which bizarrely links it to the early Cliff Richard Scope musicals such as The Young Ones (1961). The film represents a conscious attempt to avoid the typical burden of representation that sits heavily on Black British films? it isn’t concerned with the problems of life in the inner city associated with racism and deprivation. Instead it celebrates one aspect of Jamaican life in London dancehall, with its distinctive musical style and dramatic costumes.
