Journalist, Doton Adebayo has this week certainly fired a wake up call to Britain’s Black communities.? Speaking in his article in the voice Newspaper; Adebayo calls for the organisers on Notting Hill Carnival to stop Grovelling to The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea every year and instead to take the Carnival on the road.
Whilst he doesn’t advocate anything as radical as taking the carnival on a Nation tour, he suggests that Michael Williams and other organisers should stand up to the Local authority and off the carnival to other boroughs such as Hackney, Haringey, Brent, Lambeth, Tottenham and Brixton.
Adebayo says the reason he feels this way is that in his opinion the Carnival has been hijacked.? He no longer feels is’s a black afair and that in truth it has now become nothing more than a national spectacle which he calls “Negro Day”.
What do you think about this?? Do you agree with Dotun?? Has Carnival become a? “Laugh at the Blacks” spectacle or is it as good or even better than it ever was.
There can be no doubting the swelling in numbers and the diversity in the crowd.? There are lots of independent sound systems, offering a wide choice in music not to mention the fantastic array of Caribbean and African foods available.
On the Flip side though there is always the violence, the arrests, muggings.? This years Carnival saw 200 arrests and one boy was stabbed
