Hi i have read the above article with interest, i cannot undo the past but the present i can and will change. I am currently the Birmingham County Chairman of the Royal British Legion and for six months i have been very pro active with supporting the West Indian Regiments Standards and have included their participation at all of the Events being held in the City. I can say that fellow veterans have warmly received and recognised the efforts and sacrifice of the West Indian and Asian past and present service. This year the Standards have been paraded with the dignity and sombre reflection of past sacrifice. Next year i will be pushing forward and hope to have the West Indian Regiment Standards on duty at the Royal Albert Hall.

Excellent write up, friend. I’ve often seen movies with depictions of Racially Black knights and wondered how true any of it was. Till this point I was under the impression that “Sub Saharan Africa” wasn’t ‘discovered’ at the time of Medieval Europe and believe that many of the “Moors” were of the North African/Persian/Middle Eastern decent.

I have heard historians talk about historical figures like “Cleopatra” and “Hannibal” being ‘black’ from some dated accounts — but you put this all together very well. An informative piece, good work.

To note, I am Caucasian and from America — but have a strong interest in European history.

Folks,

The names themselves “Egyptian”, “Cleopatra”, and etc, are either translated or later day names – not what they would have been known by in ancient times. For example, the name Egypt is most likely a name derived from invaders from the middle east. An older name is Kemet – Kmt. Like ‘Native Americans’ or “Indians” is a name Americans have given to native peoples in America. But we all know that was not their original names. And certainly because “Big Horse” sounds American or English, we would not claim Native Americans were English, would we?

IMHO. I would not put too much stock in names and ancient ethnic groups. They may have viewed things differently than we do now. And even now, Africans view race and ethnicity different than African Americans.

Just be proud of what we as African Americans and America have done today – one of history’s greatest democracies.

Love your post, felt I had to comment about just how much has changed since I was at school in the late 1980′s, when discrimination was still present and accepted to some extent, I felt very much the same as yourself, I was always asked questions by the other kids too, which was hard. now it would just be accepted.

and just to add I hope things like this will be included how Blacks contributed greatly to UK economics ………In 1860 Oldham was in receipt of nearly 8% of America’s slave-grown cotton crop. To express this in human terms, it took over 200,000 enslaved African workers to feed Oldham’s mills that year. The best estimate would mean that for every person in Oldham working in a cotton mill there were eight enslaved Africans further down the production line. If a mill owner employed 500 hands, then his wealth also relied on 4,000 enslaved workers in the Americas.

This is a direct copy and paste from another site and is misleading because at the time it was posted there was/is a black president.

Now for the fun part. 44th President: Barack Obama (descendant of Edward I of England and William the Lion of Scotland)

As a result, He is also direct descendant of Alfred the Great and William the Conqueror.

He is also a descendant of Brian Boru the High King of Ireland(c.941-1014) as well as George Washington(our very first president) Who all presidents (except martin Van Buren) have been related to.

So yeah there is a Black member of the royal family and he is the current president of The United States of America.

You resent the headline. Good. We all should it is the sleepwalking public that allows and reinforces the law. We allow the death penalty to exist by voting for politicians that support it. Furthermore, there is much talk of solidarity within Black communities, which on the whole is nothing more than a poorly organised and disparate set of organisations , not making the proper efforts to unite. I have no need to target the death sentence. Had 1 or 2 million people signed the petition to save Troy Davis, or perhaps even half of America’s African American Population…he might still be alive. Because they choose to not know, or know and choose not to participate, he is now dead. He wont be the last.

I resent the headline. Surely the criminal justice system has to be the main target of your piece, not the general public who, through no fault of their own, may miss out on injustices like this. What about the countless examples of miscarriages of justice that are going on right now in the UK and the world over. The public has not the time to give attention to all.

Target the barbarism of death sentences and the bloody mindedness of the ‘hang em and flog em’ brigade way before you pin tragedies like this on the public.

My point of view is that people of all colours need to know the struggles of peoples of African Descent, before anyone can truly begin to understand that the colour of a persons skin does not wholly define them.

I’m a black American living in the Netherlands. My wife is a white Nederlandse. I’ve two sons (mixed race).

Although your statement / opinion above may be true; the fact remains that people of all colours have been subject to discrimination. Discrimination is just that….. discriminatory. Skinny kids; weaker kids; gay kids; minority kids; less fortunate kids have more than likely experienced what you’ve mentioned.

Often, the one’s discriminating are aware of the victims descent and / or hardships. These are the cowards / preditors which unfortunately exist. They exist in all walks of life. It’s not only “white black”. It’s “black black”. And “red red”, if you will.

My assumption, and please don’t think I’m making light of discrimination because it is a serious problem, is that you also had anger within yourself because you may not truly have known yourself.
Discriminitory preditor’s can smell this very easily. And act on it quickly. It’s been taught. And therefore ingrained.

What are you proud of? Not knowing the hood handshake was a disappointment possibly, but you would probably also be ashamed if you were in Japan and didn’t realize a custom.

To be honest; you’re not black. Or maybe you are black. To be honest you’re not white. Or maybe you are white. There’s a beauty in the combination, as would be with any combination.

What are you proud of?
