I found this thread over on another forum and thought it would be worth reviving it here. Having worked in the I.T sector for about 12 years now I can honestly tell you that I have of course come across a lot of serious and conscious discussion on black websites blogs and forums.

That said, there is a common theme in the "mainsteam" media that people of African descent are not interested in the more serious subjects. Such as Politics.

Given that the title of this thread is something of a sweeping statement, what are your opinions regarding Black popular culture, is it too entertainment based, is black community business too trivial or simply that the entertainment side of things seem to have a higher profile?

    Thread borrowed from Cocoalounge.

I disagree with the post. Black people love talking politics! You will find a lot of politics blogs ran by black people or serious discussions about politics going on on Facebook.

I'll even go further and say that you cannot be black and ignore politics because it affects us in so many ways, whether living on the continent (where head of states are failing their countrymen in so many ways) or in the diaspora (with the constant reminder that you are a second class citizen).

Well whilst I agree with the point you are making Cleerflo, dont you agree that there is far too much trivia floating around all put out by black people.

Facebook is an example that has frustrated me. Whilst it has allowed me to network and add literally hundreds of connections..everyday my inbox is filled with flyers to dance parties or DJ nights...

Sure its good to see people are being pro-active but only one in 10 invites is to something that I would consider worthwhile or educational.

trying to get people to participate is a lot harder now than in the early part of the naughties and the late 90's
