I am doing my dissertation on the relationship between black identity and skin tone, and I need to recruit more black and mixed race participants to take part. I went to one interview and the person asked me how long my parents had been in the country, which I thought was inappropriate. I was born here. Also, I noticed that sometimes the interviewers' are shocked when they see me because I don't think they expect me to be black. One interviewer said to me that he was amazed at how qualified someone like me was and that my english was very gd (well I was born here- what did he expect)I am just fed up and I feel like I have got myself into so much student debt. I now think that qualifications don't matter. I went to careers advisor, where I did my part time course and she said its all about who you know. I really need some advice on what to do? - I don't what my skin colour to hold me back. </blockquote> Ok firstly I 'd have to say tip one is ignore your boss's comments. chances are she is jealous of your ability and doesn't want to lose you. If YOU feel you have the ability to apply for a job then you have to just go for it. Also, if you don't feel that your boss is a good person to ask for a reference, make sure your second referee is very good someone you have known a long time like a doctor or teacher. With regard to interviews. it's a tricky one. I get the same reaction. I get interviews based on my c.v which has loads of experience listed. However, I can see they are taken aback when they see me walk through the door. The trick is to not give them the option. Be the best. Don't ever arrive late, don't chew gum, turn your phone off as soon as you arrive at the venue. Make sure you look your very best. Know what your strengths are by looking at the application requirements ..so when they ask you why you are suited to the job you already have a long and detailed answer as to why you are the best person for the job. Make sure you do a little research into the company you are applying to. Know them and make sure you fit with their ethos. One last tip, don't put photographs on your CV or linked-in Profile. Furthermore, I have noticed that my workload is significantly more than my colleagues. One of my colleagues spends most of the time on the internet playing games or on facebook and then she complains to my boss that she has so much work to do and then my boss tells me that I should help ease the workload. i find that I am doing the work, while she doesn't do much. Anyway I have started applying for jobs again at my level and I am finding it hard to get back to the level I was before. My boss even said to me that she doesn't think I could cope with doing a higher post and that working at administrative level is more appropriate for me. I don't know what to do. I went to one interview and the person asked me how long my parents had been in the country, which I thought was inappropriate. I was born here. Also, I noticed that sometimes the interviewers' are shocked when they see me because I don't think they expect me to be black. One interviewer said to me that he was amazed at how qualified someone like me was and that my english was very gd (well I was born here- what did he expect)I am just fed up and I feel like I have got myself into so much student debt. I now think that qualifications don't matter. I went to careers advisor, where I did my part time course and she said its all about who you know. I really need some advice on what to do? - I don't what my skin colour to hold me back. I despair when i hear other races using the 'N' word as a term to describe the black race and when i question it the reply i receive is "Well,i don't mean any offense, they use in rap music" I personally think it is a disgrace that it is still deemed acceptable in the public eye. Imagine if cold play, Amy Winehouse or any other white artist/group kept using that term, there would be outrage, so i ask why is it allowed or why do we accept it? I find it extremly offensive. I think it is a disgrace that people before us have fought for their rights, have fought against oppression & that in this day and age a certain sub culture of the black race feel it ok to brand themselves with the degrading term used by other races to exert their power over us. They state they are reclaiming the word!! why would you want to reclaim a word that is filled with the innocent blood and hatred of so many. How about reclaiming the black stereotype in general and flipping that to be a more positive, empowering one?! The 'N' word is said to mean ignorant, which is almost appropriate to the fact that some rap artists, when given the chance in the public eye to empower & encourage the black race, to represent the black race, that they choose to align themselves with the derogatory ideal of what it means to be black. Think this an area that needs to be highlighted/petitioned. What do you think? Which addresses the topic discussed. I feel one of the ways forward is the provision of information and the passing of knowledge. It was run by a guy named Phil that was from the UK. AS I say, its been many a year since I first started coming here. This site has gone through many renovations since then as well. The forum used to be really lively. Its a shame there is no archive of some of the original threads about interracial dating etc. They seemed to be very popular and attract alot of visitors. Anyway, its probably been a year or more since I last checked in, so I was thinking about this site and was seeing if it was still alive, and came by for a visit. Where is Msafroamerican or whatever her name used to be?
