War Children
GUA Africa was founded by Emmanuel Jal, an ex-child soldier turned rap artist. The word GUA (pronounced gwaah) means peace in Nuer, a tribal language of Southern Sudan.
Emmanuel Jal was just three years old when civil war broke out in Sudan, it was a war that would last 22 years killing an estimated 2 million civilians and causing another 4 million people to flee their homes.
At the age of eight he was taken from his family to a refugee camp in Ethiopia where he was taught to be soldier, fighting for the rebel army in Sudan.
