I just think marriage is not a cultural value for most black women. I don't know why, it's just not something they care about. The media tries to make them care far more than they actually do.

I believe marriage is outdated and no longer necessary. However, there are various reasons why some couples might marry. In terms of health benefits, retirement benefits & inheritance laws, many companies & insurance agencies require that a couple is married to receive benefits. Many laws have changed but even today, you cannot designate that someone whom you are not married to can receive your retirement benefits. In most cases, you have to be married 10 yrs if you want to qualify for your spouse's retirement benefits. I've been living in "sin" for several years and we are deliriously happy together. But we worry about and have to consider things like life insurance & home ownership because legally, couples living together do not have the same rights as married couples. I think its wrong and forces people to marry who normally would not marry. If my partner and I do marry, it will be for legal reasons not love. And we will not feed into the capitalist/consumer driven affair that marriage has become in our culture and get married in a church. No thank you!
